Win a prize with our Calendar                                   Competition!

We are sorry that we have had to suspend the calendar competition for the time being.  Thanks to those who have entered: you are still welcome to submit your entries for fun but we aren't currently able to give out any prizes

January 2022 - The Unicorn is on our H1/H2 route from Goring to Henley - and is located in Peppard Common.

February 2022 - We can only think that the train company who recently started operating with this slogan believes that rail travellers expections are generally so low that they couldn't really be any worse.  But I still think it's risky of Lumo, running trains between London and Edinburgh on the East Coast mainline is taking a risk!

March 2022 - Ronaldsway airport is on the Isle of Man.  It's a short walk from this halt but the Steam Railway services from Douglas to Port Erin haven't stopped there since the pandemic.  On the few occasions I have used it I was the only passenger getting on or off.  It's my suitcase in the picture!

April 2022 - it's Wensleydale where the former line linking Northallerton through Leyburn and Hawes to Garsdale on the famous Settle & Carlisle line which closed to passengers in 1954 (except for just one train a day between Hawes and Garsdale which ran for another five years!).  The line has been resurrected as far as Redmire, seen in this photo.  These single car units (also known as 'bubblecars'!) were common on branchlines especially on BR's Western Region in the 60s and 70s, and could also be seen on mainline services through Goring.

May 2022 - the leaning tower in the background surely gives it away - Pisa in Italy of course!

June 2022 - the Butlins in question is at Minehead on the Somerset coast.  Before BR closed the branchline in 1971 you would have changed at Taunton, but since the West Somerset Railway reopend the line for heritage trains, this HST special from London terminated at Bishops Lydeard where passengers had to transfer to the West Somerset train on the right hauled by a 'Western' heritage diesel.

July 2022 - it's Watlington of course - which you can reach on Fridays when we run two return trips from Wallingford on our route 137.

August 2022 - the Little White Bus (not to be confused with our own Little Blue Bus!) runs from Garsdale station on the famous Settle-Carlisle line to the little town of Hawes in picturesque Wensleydale.  Once upon a time you could have changed at Garsdale for a train to Hawes - but the (very useful?) one train a day service ceased in 1959, even before Beeching's cuts.

Slaggyford is an intermediate station on the former Haltwhistle to Alston (Cumbria) branch line which survived Beeching but was eventually closed by British Rail May 1976.  Part of the route from Alston northwards has been reopened as a narrow guage line.

October 2022 - it's Douglas, Isle of Man.  After spending a lot of money restyling the promenade the horse trams have returned but the route has been shortened considerably.  Sadly it remains to be seen if they will find the money to restore it to its full length.

November 2022 - believe it or not, it's stopped to pick up passengers at platform 1 Goring & Streatley station!

December 2022 - of course it's 'Causton' but you're very unlikely to find one of our buses in the TV series!
