Good news! Our new Winter Timetable started on December 3rd, and we've introduced for a trial period a service on Wednesdays as well as Saturdays! Times have changed; we'll run two return journeys but you'll have more time in Reading for shopping so we do hope you'll like the new service. Please note the morning bus will leave Whitchurch at 09.59 and Whitchurch Hill at 10.04, about 15 minutes earlier than the previous timetable. Full details of the new timetable are shown here below the current one. The bus will run past Tesco Kings Meadow first before terminating reaching the town centre (serving the usual stops in Blagrave Street, Friar Street and Station Road).
The route has also been extended beyond the Town Centre to serve Royal Berks Hospital (Craven Road) and two retail parks (Brunel and Reading Gate) to the south of the town/.
New Winter Timetable running on Wednesdays and Saturdays from December 5th 2018
Special Note: It has come to our attention that if you do an internet search for the 142, you may be directed to an old (2013) Thames Travel timetable. Unfortunately Thames Travel tell us they are not able to remove it - apparently it will be there for eternity! Please ignore it, the correct timetable is shown below, and Traveline also has the correct times. Sorry for any confusion but the worldwideweb is outside of our control (or anyone elses according to Thames Travel!!)
From the commencement of the Winter Timetable, in order to help the new Wednesday service cover its costs, fares will change again. We won't be selling return tickets for most journeys starting in Oxfordshire and the minimum single fare from Oxfordshire stops will be £3. Most return journeys will not increase as many single fares from Reading and West Berkshire stops will be reduced. The new fares table is shown here below the current one.
Revised fares for the Winter Timetable from December 3rd 2018
What's the route in Caversham Heights?
The 142 follows the yellow highlighted route from Caversham Library northwards... you can board or alight at any bus stop but please do give a clear hand signal to the driver if you wish to board, and let them know in good time if you want to get off. AND it's only £1.50 adult single for any journey between Shepherd's Lane (the Oxfordshire boundary) and Blagrave Street/Tesco King's Meadow no matter how long or short!
Printed copies of the new timetables (as above) are now available - currently on the buses, and also at Goring Library, the Community Centre, and Goring Railway Station and Pangbourne Library (while stocks last!).
Travelling from Wallingford?
Most 142 services have good connections at Goring station to or from the 134 Wallingford service.
Bus Links between Reading Town Centre, Caversham and Tesco King's Meadow
Horseman Coaches operate a free bus on behalf of Tesco on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, leaving the store every 20 minutes from 09.47 to 14.07, serving Forbury Road, Minster Street, St Marys Butts and Friar Street. Details are available on the bus - ask the driver for a timetable. Please note: this service does not operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays.
We are sorry to advise that Reading Borough Council has withdrawn funding for Reading Buses' service 28 shown below, so this service will not be running after July 28th 2018. The Horseman Coaches bus is still running (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) for the time being.
